Meet our members of the month!!

December

Our member of the month for December is Christina Carrillo! Christina has made so many lifestyle changes since starting at BrickYard. She is always ready to try something new with a smile on her face! Congratulations! Check out her interview below.

How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?
I've been at Brickyard for almost 2 years. I joined April 2015. I don't remember what the exact workout was, but it did include running and sit-ups! I was so out of shape, I felt like I was going to die! My stomach so much from the sit-ups, that I thought it hurt myself. Hahahah!!

How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?
My previous lifestyle was so unhealthy! Exercise? I thought if I walked around the block, I did my exercise for the week! I didn't have respect for food, and never practiced portion control.
If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?

The perfect workout would NOT include Wall Balls. But, would include power cleans, rowing, and handstand push-ups (they are a work in progress).

What animal best represents you today?
The animal that I feel best represents me would be an Owl. They are seen as protectors, have strong intuition, and are wise.

If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?
The song that I would love to hear while working out, would be Killing in the Name of, by Rage Against the Machine.

If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go?
The best words to describe my lifestyle now would be Self Control, Aware, Strong, Happy Healthy.

What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?
Kinda sounds like a cliche, but all you have to do is give it a try. If it's not for you, you at least said YES! It took my sister a year to convince me to try a "free" class. That night I signed up for foundations, and I haven't looked back since. Step outside your comfort zone. I allowed myself to do that and I have met the greatest community of people who come from all walks of life, and my life is that much more enriched. I wouldn't have met some of the greatest coaches or people if I continued to say NO, but I decided to say YES!

November

Our member of the month for November is Emma Winters! Emma is such a joy to be around as she bounces through the box with a huge smile on her face, she is always willing to lend a helping hand and loves EVERY WOD that she comes across. Congrats!!!! check out her interview below:
1. How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?

I have been watching my mom workout at BrickYard since it opened in 2012. I’ve been a member since January 2014 when the Kids program started. My first workout was 15-12-9 of squats and push ups.

2. How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?

Since I’m only 11 this is my first lifestyle. I’m happy that CrossFit, Gymnastics, and eating healthy is apart of it. I plan to keep it that way.

3. If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?

My Perfect Workout:
21-15-9 of Bar Muscle ups, Snatches, pull-ups and HSPU

4. What animal best represents you today?

A Kangaroo because I am always bouncing around excited about the WOD!

5. If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?

As long as any music is playing I’m good

6. If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go?

Happy, Strong, Competitive, Healthy, and Ambitious

7. What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?

Burpees are awesome, don’t listen to what everyone else says!!!

October

Our member of the Month for October is Pete O! Pete has been an excellent member for 3 years, just came off a bunch of medications and is a rock star! Check out his interview below:

1. How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?
I’ve been at Brickyard for just over 3 years now, thanks to my 2 sons and daughter in law for getting my bride Terry of 31 years and myself a 6 month membership. I wish I did remember my first WOD because I would be curious how much better I would have performed doing it now.

2. How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?
I didn’t think my previous lifestyle was horrible, but it sure is MUCH better now. In the last 6 months I surely have been educated about nutrition with Michele’s customized plan. It definitely is a lifestyle change for Terry and myself but doing it as a team makes it much easier. At 57 years old I had been on a few diets (nasty word) over the years and most of them were hard for me to stick to. I whole heartily agree with a recent member saying that “poor nutrition can’t outpace exercise”.

3. If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?
My design for a WOD would be a 3 minute AMRAP with each of the following movements with a 1 minute rest between each movement. Pullups - Box Jumps - Dead Lifts – Calorie Row – Goblet Squats – Farmers Carry – Double Unders / Singles. Hmmm this sounds good for a Sunday 27 minute endurance WOD.

4. What animal best represents you today?
The animal that probably still represents me dates back to my high school days. It is the rhino because I’m slow and steady. BUT since losing 34 pounds recently if you see a rhino charging at you running around the building WATCH OUT.

5. If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?
When it comes to songs my favorite song would be “Another One Bites The Dust” by Queen because it has a good beat to keep pace with squats and or wall balls.

6. If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go?
The 5 words that best describe me are family, healthy, hardworking, reliable, and competitive

7. What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?
My advice for anyone thinking of joining Crossfit would be the same as the Nike slogan “Just Do It”. I talk about Crossfit all the time with my co-workers and they look at me like I’m nuts when I explain the WOD to them. But until you are involved and get bitten by the Crossfit bug I wouldn’t expect them to understand. I have met so many good people at Brickyard and the comradery reminds me of my time in the Marine Corps. The coaches here truly have everyone’s best interest in mind just in the way they go thru every movement for every WOD. They also make corrections as needed during the WOD and use positive reinforcement to motivate you when the going gets tuff. I am so impressed of the way Gerry and Michele have grown this Crossfit box and to see the results on people from beginners to elite athletes is remarkable.

September

Our member of the Month for September is Abby Fuller!!! Abby is such an amazing role model for us all, crushing WODs (safely) while WODDing for two. Everyone LOOK out baby Fuller was due Oct 14th, and Momma Fuller has been WODDing with a 30 pound vest for 9 months.
1. How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?
I have been doing Crossfit for 3 ½ years, and have been a member at CFBY for 2 ½ years. All I can remember about my first workout at CFBY were 24” box jumps, and thinking “I’m going to eat it on my first day here.” Thankfully I didn’t, although I’m sure I’ve made a fool of myself plenty of times since!
2. How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?
I had been active for a while before starting Crossfit, but it was repetitive and monotonous. I compartmentalized working out rather than incorporating it into my lifestyle: I’d work out but did not match my diet to my activity needs. I was also an enormous klutz – tripping over everything, running into walls, which I now realize was due to my complete lack of muscle tone. Now I feel challenged every day, and that fosters a feeling of confidence and accomplishment. By matching my diet to my training I saw results I never thought possible. Now being 9-months pregnant I don’t feel as big as I thought I would – I can manage and move my new body weight because I continued training. My current lifestyle was a priority when I first found out I was pregnant, and as a priority I was able to carry it through my pregnancy. I feel I’ll be able to maintain it postpartum despite any challenges a new baby will bring.
3. If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?
It would be the tall-man’s heavy WOD! Heavy wall balls, box jumps, and heavy snatches – I haven’t jumped or lifted heavy in 9 months!
4. What animal best represents you today?
Not to sound totally dramatic but a Phoenix. I started Crossfit during a particularly transformative time in my life during which I was forced to sink or swim. Aside from its impact on my physical abilities, Crossfit was the catalyst that enabled both the emotional and mental changes that I needed to move my life forward. The landscape of my life is totally different, and I owe so much of that to the community I’ve become a part of.
5. If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?
I tend to zone out whatever music is on, unless it’s old school hip hop or other classic 90s hits and I wind up singing along. There is also something about hard rock that makes me feel like a total bada$$ while throwing around big weight.
6. If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go?
Committed, Healthy and Centered, but also Flexible and Free
7. What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?
Walking in to the gym is the hardest part. There will always be a million reasons not to try something that pries you out of your comfort zone, and then a million corresponding reasons that you’ll be staying right where you’re at. It’s also hard to trust the process if you’ve never seen it through to completion. Just show up - it all starts with one step through the door.

August

Our member of the month for August is Jen Schaefer! She comes in at 5:45AM with a huge smile on her face ready to GO! Congrats! Check out her interview below!
How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout? I started in July of 2014. I don’t remember exactly what the workout was, but I remember feeling humbled. I knew it’d be a while before I was an Rx regular at Brickyard. And it sure was.

How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today? This is a hard question because I’m always changing and challenging myself. I’ve been active in one form or another for most of my life. Right now at 44, though, I’m in the best shape of my life. Better than when I was running miles and miles each week. Better than when I was 20 and thought a fast metabolism could outpace poor nutrition. I take nothing with my health for granted now. I have a family history of a lot of things that have risk factors that can be lessened with good nutrition and regular, vigorous exercise so I want to do everything I can to be around as long as I can.

If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be? All the things I’ve fought so hard at getting, even though I’m still not great at them: double unders, HSPU, squat cleans and squat snatches. That’s a terrible workout, though. Please don’t ever offer it.

What animal best represents you today? Elephant. Smart, steady, family centered, and strong.

If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be? Anything from the Foo Fighters or Cypress Hill. You can get up a mean sweat to the Hip Hop BBQ channel!

If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go? Family, Challenge, Change, Dedication, Goofy

What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting? Just start. We all just started at one point. You don’t have to be more fit or stronger or thinner or less out of breath or anything to start. You just have to start. You don’t grow unless you push outside of being comfortable.

July

Our Member of the Month for July is Trey Whitaker! Check out Trey's interview Below:

How long have you been with us at CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?

I've started CrossFit about 3 years ago and moved to Brickyard about a year ago. I was looking for a box with the best possible coaches, programming and community. Friends of mine suggested that Brickyard had these elements. They proved to be correct.

My first workout at Brickyard was Death by Squat Cleans. What made it most memorable was seeing old friends like Viv, Missy and Elizabeth. I was hooked right away.

How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?

I had cancer surgeries in 2011 and 2012. In the aftermath, I expected that I would need to retire from strenuous activities. I felt weak and brittle. Now, despite being 57 years old and with lots of room for improvement, I feel as though I've never been stronger and more able. CrossFit has been mentally and physically transforming.

If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?

I would like a 'Death by Triplet' of strict presses, deadlifts and back squats followed by a hundred yard tire flip. I'd like this to be a partner workout. My partner would be Brooke Wells.

What animal best represents you today?

I'd say an old lion. Scarred body, missing teeth, mangled and patchy mane with a preference for naps in the shade but still game for an occasional rumble.

If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?

Either 'Shotgun' by Junior Walker & The All Stars or 'It's a Man's World' by James Brown and Luciano Pavarotti.

If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go?

Sleep, eat, family, CrossFit, repeat.

What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?

Supportive friends, expert advice and a healthy lifestyle are key elements to a happier and more satisfying life. Dedicating yourself to CrossFit will make you healthier, happier and allow you to meet a slew of very cool folks

June

Our Member of the for June is Mindi Cieck! She really needs no introduction, She always comes in with a smile on her face and has no idea what an amazing athlete she really is. Congrats Mindi!! Read her interview below!

1. How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout? I’ve been a member of CFBY for just over two years. Post WOD’s, I usually enter a state of global transient amnesia. However, what I clearly remember is my first pre-WOD warm up. It included five box jumps (a skill which I was physically incapable of performing). I panicked and embarrassingly escalated to tears as I wondered how I was going to do a WOD when I couldn’t even do it’s warm up. Gina Marie intervened and compassionately whispered, “do step ups”. I am forever indebted to Gina Marie for helping me to survive my first team WOD.

2. How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today? Previously, I was a rat running on a wheel. I worked hard and had good intent but went nowhere fast.

3. If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be? As I’ve already confided in Coach Seth, my goal is to someday become a Hot Mama. Every Gerry-inspired WOD is perfect for helping me to achieve such. While I remain worlds away from becoming a Hot Mama, I am inspired and motivated by the fact that I am under the same roof WHERE YOU ALL WORK OUT!  ;)

4. What animal best represents you today? I am a tortoise who is slow (and most likely running late) but is doing her best to someday catch up to all of you amazing hares.

5. If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be? Enter Sandman by Metallica...nothing compares to the energy of New Yorker’s going wild when Mariana Rivera would enter the field to close a game.

6. If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go? “Crazy, that’s how it goes,” Ozzy Osbourne.

7. What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?

I must echo Noah Forest’s words of wisdom, “Just keep coming”. The coaches here are downright phenomenal. CFBY consists of remarkable and amazing individuals who genuinely care and support each other. Gerry and Michele deserve great accolades for building this extraordinary community!

May

Our member of the month for May is are First Couple to be voted in! Jess and Kevin Fagan are such a fun loving couple and has made some huge changes over the last year being with us! Congrats! Read their interview below!
1. How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?
Kev started in August 2015 and Jess started in September 2015. Our first workout together was Suzie Williams. We both did scales that weren’t even on the board.
2. How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?
Before we joined we would come home from work, eat dinner and sit in front of the TV. Now we come home from work, go to the gym, eat dinner and sit in front of the TV.
3. If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?
Jess: Some combination of running, cleans, situps and pullups.
Kevin: Some combination of rowing, box jumps, cleans and back squats.
4. What animal best represents you today?
Jess: Cheetah, due to my love of running.
Kevin: Panther, due to my combination of speed, raw power and mystique.
5. If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?
Jess: Anything by Beyonce
Kevin: Bulls on Parade
6. If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go? Life is short, have fun
7. What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?
You won’t die, you will just feel like you’re dying, but it’s worth it so give it a shot.

January

Our member of the month for January is Sam Snow!!! Sam is a hard worker and has made awesome gains over the last 2 years, Congratulations !
Interview for Member of the Month:
1. How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout? 2 years and 2 months. Sadly, I do not remember my first workout at Brickyard. Lame, I know.

2. How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today? I'm a lot more conscientious of what I consume and I feel healthy and strong.

3. If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be? Something with double unders, heavy-ish cleans and burpees (perhaps over than conveniently placed clean bar)!

4. What animal best represents you today? I would have to say a type of bird like a Hawk or Osprey.

5. If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be? All I do is win by DJ Khaled.

6. If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go? Adventurous, supportive, loving, focused, healthy

7. What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting? Try it out! The worse thing than can happen is that you don't like it. But if you do like it, it will change your life in a way that you can't even imagine (which is a good thing). If you're nervous about what you see on tv or the internet, don't be, no one starts out that way. The coaches at Brickyard are always looking out for you and can scale the workout to fit your abilities. They make sure you're doing the movements correctly and if you need help, they will go step by step with you.

December

Our member of the month for December is LENA!!! Lena has been working so hard and has made so many gains over the past year. We can not wait to see what 2016 bring for her. Here is her interview!
1. How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?
14 months as of January 16’ - I can’t believe it’s been over a year already!
God - yes I remember my first workout. Chelsea – as a freshy out of Jodi’s foundations classes. It was horrible despite aggressively scaling it down. I am now a believer of love at first defeat.

2. How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?
Oh boy… My previous lifestyle consisted of ultra-sedentary lounging, no real fitness goal or plan other than strictly weight loss, an occasional trip to the traditional gym down the road, and donuts. Needless to say there were a lot of imbalances that needed adjusting, and donuts. Fast-forward to today at BrickYard – life has changed quite a bit. I’m more balanced than I’ve ever been in and outside of the gym (work, school, etc.) and my eating has been on point (aka donut sober). Between the support and encouragement of the coaches and members here (Naughty Nooners, I love you all), falling out of routine has become more burdensome than showing up daily.

3. If you could design the perfect workout for yourself what would it be?
A combo of… a skill or two I dread, some movements I could improve my technique on, and a few movements I can perform with decency.
So… maybe a lil’ sunnin’ sunnin’ like…
18 min AMRAP:
250m row (Yippy!)
15 KB Swings
12 Squat Snatches
9 Squat Cleans
6 Burpee Box Jumps (Oy.)

4. What animal best represents you today?
GoToQuiz.com says I am a Silver and Red Wolf… sounds rad and the internet is always right - I’m rollin’ with it.

5. If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?
There’s nothing like “One Step Closer” by Linkin Park dropping in the middle of a rough workout to help push you through.

6. If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go?
Bacon. Bacon. Bacon. Bacon. Bacon.
Practice good habits: patiently, humbly

7. What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?
Whoever you are, we’ll be happy to welcome you and more than stoked to workout alongside you. We all went through day number 1, and we’re here to be there for yours. And to those waiting to “feel” ready, lace up– that’s about as ready as you need to be to get the ball rolling.

November

Our member of the month for November goes to Natalie Cohen. Natalie is truly an inspirational women, she has been part of our family since March 2014 and she has made an amazing transformation since then. She works hard, eats healthy, and is not afraid to get outside her comfort zone. Big Congrats to our Natalie! Check out her interview below:
1. How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?
I began my journey back in March 2014. The first workout was 7 rounds of 10 HSPU, 15 knees-2-elbows, 20 Goblet Squats. I almost ran out when I saw the whiteboard. Needless to say, I became very closely acquainted with the floor. I managed 5 very heavily scaled rounds before being cut off. It was months until I actually would make it through ALL the rounds of ANY workout and even the warmups left me panting in a pile of sweat.

2. How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?
I was into fitness… fitin’this pizza into my mouth. I went down the path many did after college; got married and joined the working class. Life got busy and the demands of work transitioned me from being active-ish, to lots of desk, travel time and eating junk on the road. When my dad passed away after a long battle with congestive heart failure, the reality hit close to home. I was slowly killing myself. At the time with a baby on my hip, juggling work and life, I could barely get through the daily motions. I felt like crap physically and emotionally. I had many failed attempts at being active; typical gym, YMCA, Beer League “Sports” but I never stuck with anything more than a few months. I never made progress and was very uncomfortable in a gym setting, and even worse trying things on my own.

3. If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?
Anything with power snatches, deadlifts or HSPU. ‪#‎ShortPersonProblems‬

4. What animal best represents you today?Mmmm.. maybe a goat?
I’m pretty short and compact. Goats are also pretty stubborn, mischievous and tend to bite off more than they can chew at times.

5. If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?
I think the ultimate workout song would be an instrumental cover of alternative rock music or classic rock.

6. If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go?
Funny, Flexible, Farmer, Family, Stubborn.

7. What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting? Not to sound cliché – but JUST DO IT! Show up and push yourself out of your comfort zone. There are so many folks from different walks of life, different struggles and abilities all working as one. Don’t cherry pick the WODs. Anything can be scaled and eventually the work will pay off in tenfold, even though it may seem impossible and soul crushing at first. Get involved with the Brickyard community, there are lots of other things such as nutrition and cooking seminars, skill classes, strength and mobility classes and extra programming. The Brickyard is truly an amazing place that can be life changing if you’re willing to take the first step.

October

Our member of the month for October is Mark Gagnon! Most people know Mark for his witty jokes, he is a hard worker and a joy to have in class. Congrats! Check out his interview below!

1.    How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?

I started in March 2013.  My first workout was Cleans and it was awful, and it still is!  Seth described my hold on the bar as a “death grip”.   I will be never known for speed (mentally or physically) but I will continue working on moving the elbows quick.

2.    How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?

Have I ever mentioned I was married before?  Well, I don’t have to drink so much anymore now that I am divorced.  I have found the last thing you want to do is sport a hangover for a weekend workout.  I witnessed others visiting the dumpster and decided that part of the workout was not for me, as much as I came close being stone sober.

3.    If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?

Pull-ups, Push-ups and Push Press.  That is about all that’s left which Noah doesn’t crush me on.

4.    What animal best represents you today?

A skunk? Pepe Le Phew?  Maybe a sloth, slow and deliberate.

5.    If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?

Anything by Rage Against the Machine.

6.    If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go?

Work, Eat, drink, love, laugh.  Love is usually preceded by drinks.  Though not Bill Cosby drinks.

7.    What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?

Show up and it is never too late to start.  There is always something pulling you away, be it family, work, whatever.  The key is coming in on a regular schedule and it will all fall into place.   The coaching staff is great, every one of them offer different insights about how to improve.  I tell friends the sooner they start, the better off they will be.  Besides the obvious physical impact, the physiological benefits are great.  The atmosphere at Brickyard is encouraging and positive and I miss it on my off-days.  It is a good thing there is no web cam because I wouldn’t be working since I would be watching what I was missing and cheering my CFBY friends from afar.

September

Our Member of the month for September is JUAN!!!!!! Juan Works Super Hard and Always finds a Way to Yell to everyone in the middle of class to keep going! Congratulations Juan! Check out his interview below:
Interview for Member of the Month:
1.    How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?
I’ve been with CFBY for just about 3 years!   I’ll never forget my first WOD right after I finished Foundations…and every time I hear her name my eyes twitch.  I met Fran that day and she kicked my butt.

2.    How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?
Before Crossfit I was one of those people who ate anything and didn’t care what I was doing because I told myself I would just hit the gym harder.  I was stuck in the old gym routine and plateauing for years.  Ever since I started Crossfit, my diet has changed drastically.  I eat so much better and I actually understand how I’m helping my body.  I’m pushing my body to the limits and beyond during workouts, getting PR’s and making my goals.  I’ve accomplished things in Crossfit that I never thought I could’ve done.  I’m constantly challenged during Gerry and Michele’s WODs and that makes this experience all the better.  I love Crossfit and I love Brickyard.  Being a member here has 100% changed my life for the better!

3.    If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?
The perfect workout for me would have to include double unders, toes-to-bar, Handstand Push-ups, and some kettlebell action.  Help warm up the shoulders a little bit.

4.    What animal best represents you today?
Not an easy question.  I would have to say a Pitbull and I have my pup Cooper to thank for my inspiration.  He’s always in the mood to play and be active and also doesn’t mind just hanging out and being lazy.  Pretty much how I like to be.  Plus dogs are just awesome and Pitbulls are fantastic.

5.    If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?
Eminem – Lose Yourself.  I remember doing the Opens 15.1a WOD at the old place.  My PR for a C&J was holding at 185#.  I had only a couple minutes left and I was feeling good.  Throw a little Eminem in with 205# and bam…new PR.

6.    If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go?
Healthy.  Active.  Thankful.  Motivated.  Dedicated.

7.    What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?
Don’t think, just do it!  Everyone has an opinion and the only way to make your own is to start up.  You will be constantly challenged, always supported, and you will never be made to feel uncomfortable.  Brickyard is full of the smartest coaches around who are also the nicest people you will ever meet.  They will get you to where you want to be and beyond.  Crossfit is competitive and will get you pumped to workout everyday.  You have to always know that you WILL improve and you WILL get stronger!  It’s a guarantee.

August

Our Member of the month for August is GINA!!!! She is just such a wonderful, hard working, and positive person! Congratulations to Gina!
Check out her interview below:

1.     How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?

2 yrs, 1 month, 1 week and 4 days!!! <3.  Yes, first workout was on 7/24/13.

2.     How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?  Previous lifestyle/regimen had me focusing on specific lifts...very repetitive. Lifestyle today, I am more consistent with total body conditioning.  CFBY has made me faster and stronger.  The "well rounded" athlete model that is used in CF has helped me excel in all other sports that I participate in.

3.     If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?  HSPU's, Anything KB, heavy bench, pistols, cleans and burpees.  Oh and Spiderman racing on a skateboard!

4.     What animal best represents you today? Lioness.

5.     If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be? The Game- Disturbed - OR- anything hip-hop/dance.  I know totally opposite spectrums.

6.     If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go? Loyal, Passionate, Adventurous, Loving and Hard Worker.

7.     What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?  If someone is hesitant about CF, I equate it to dancing.  You can not compare yourself to someone else's moves.  Don’t be shy, afraid or apprehensive "to get on the dancefloor" just because you see or think someone is better than you.  Or maybe you think, "I can't do that".  COME ON IN~ the coaches and community will help you find your own groove, I promise!  The best part about CF is that we ARE all different and excel in different areas.  There is one thing that is the same...it's the HEART that each and every person (beginner, moderate or advanced) puts into every WOD every day.  And yes I am going to get mushy on all of you...but that is a beautiful site to see!!!

July

Keith Keegan

1.     How long have you been with us At CFBY? 10 Months.

2.     Do you remember your first workout? Sure do. It was a 12 min AMRAP 3 front squats, 6 T2B and 9 Burpees. I remember thinking I would be able to do 135 lbs “pretty easily”, not thinking of the fact I had to get it in the front rack position first. I barely got through 4 rounds.

3.     How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today? Previous (post kids) lifestyle was a little sedentary.  I played basketball once or twice a week and thought I was still keeping somewhat in shape. Today’s lifestyle is much healthier. I eat cleaner most of the time (just don’t tell Michele M. that….). I am at the Brickyard 5 days a week doing multiple workouts a day. I just feel better. Maybe even look better (that’s debatable).

4.     If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be? Something with overhead squats, squat snatches, double unders and handstand pushups, cause I am pretty terrible at all of those and would like to get better at them.

5.     What animal best represents you today? According to the online quiz I just took at www.whatanimalami.com I am an “enduring wildebeest”…and the internet is NEVER wrong so I’ll go with that…an “enduring wildebeest”.

6.     If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be? Any 90’s hip hop will do the trick.

7.     If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go? Driven, Dedicated, Determined, Reliable, Humble

8.     What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?

Best advice I can think of is to just show up consistently. Don’t look at the WOD’s beforehand. Wait till you walk through the door and read them on the whiteboard…that way there is no chance of talking yourself out of really tough WOD’s or WOD’s with movements you don’t like. Don’t be afraid to ask questions either. I know I ask more than my fair share daily. Other than that…just show up. The results will come….

May

Our Member of the month for May is Tina Roy. Tina works hard and goes above and beyond what it takes to be an excellent member. Her energy makes the 5:45am class even better!  Congratulations! Check out his interview below!

1. How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?
I started Fall of 2012. The 1st workout was something to do with cleans and I cried a little because I couldn’t get the coordination to do it.

2. How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?
My previous life was unstructured and confused. I just dreamed of being strong and having muscles, but I was only intermittently body building. I never had a routine and I struggled with trying to be skinny. My diet was sad and full of sugar and flour. Now I’m dedicated to my whole self. Bad eating is not an option and I’m working out today……no more “I’ll start tomorrow” business.

3. If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?
The perfect workout would be: 22 min AMRAP: 11 Cleans, 5 pull ups, 6 push ups, 22 sit ups

4. What animal best represents you today?
The animal that best represents me would be a horse (that hates to run).

5. If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?
Fav workout song: Rage Against the Machine – Killing in the name of

6. If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go?
5 words that summarize my lifestyle: Go, Go, Go, Sleep. Repeat.

7. What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?Advice for new peeps: In this order: Show up. Learn something everyday. Try hard. Get stronger. Try even harder. Get out of your comfort zone. See results. Get addicted. Boom…mind blown

April

Our Member of the month for April is Jeff DeMartino. Jeff works hard and goes above and beyond what it takes to be an excellent member. Congratulations! Check out his interview below!

1. How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?

I came to CFBY almost a year ago after having been doing Crossfit for about 2 years. I remember it was a workout involving pistols, which I wasn’t able to do at the time. I really liked the scaling option we used in that WOD since it allowed you to go through the full range of motion and develop the strength and flexibility needed for them.

2. How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?

I played a lot of team sports growing up and through high school but that all stopped when I got to college. I ran sporadically and did some weightlifting in the gym but my diet was terrible and I was totally out of shape. Crossfit has gotten me in the best shape of my life and the coaches have helped optimize my diet for health and performance. Crossfit has also given my life balance, it keeps me stress free and has helped me develop the mental fortitude to take on challenges in other areas of life.

3. If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?

Hang power snatches and burpees (maybe some running or rowing thrown in too).

4. What animal best represents you today?

Greyhound, long limbs and loves to run

5. If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?

I like old school hip hop

6. If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go?

Motivated, adventurous, hardworking, loyal, kind

7. What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?

Come and make new friends! The community is the best part of Crossfit and having people to push you and hold you accountable will go a long way toward helping you to achieve your goals.

March

Becky Curtin:

Our Member of the month for March is Becky Curtin. We have some strong moms to be at CFBY and Becky is definitely one of them! Congratulations!
1.    How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?
I have been with CFBY for one year, and I remember the first workout quite clearly.  After coming out of foundations I was ready for a workout that consisted of a variety of movements – lunges, sit-ups, running…something I could do without standing out too much as someone who is new and has no idea what’s going on.  Instead, it was a three rep max of overhead squats.  (Now, looking back I realize it could have been much worse: it could have been a three rep max of power snatches.)  I was grouped with three fellow BrickYarders who had been members for quite some time.  It was during that workout I quickly learned the amazing community of encouraging and supportive members that make up CFBY.  I took away a few things after that work out:  dropping the bar is a lot of fun, the coaches help and encourage everyone, and CFBY is truly a wonderful community to be a part of.

2.    How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?
I have always been involved in one way or another with organized sports - soccer being the main sport.  However, after college and without a team continuously motivating me to keep in shape and working out, I began to slack.  I took up running for a few years - competing in a couple half marathons, but I never really got the feeling I was improving fitness-wise as an individual. I would still eat like I was in college, but without the metabolism I used to have, that too caught up with me.  Joining CFBY helped me understand a new way of working out more efficiently.  Not only was I starting to strengthen all aspects of my body, I began to understand the value of good nutrition and how it truly impacts the way I feel when working out.

3.    If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?
It would probably be some sort of an Endurance WOD with a variety of movements which could include:  running, push presses, and kettle bell swings.

4.    What animal best represents you today?  Goat

5.    If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?
Dragula by Rob Zombie

6.    If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go?
Focused, Motivated, Committed, Positive

7.    What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?
My personal advice would be sign up and show up.  With the myriad of workouts that are created all of the time there will always be something different and exciting to walk into.  All of the coaches are extremely knowledgeable and creative, and are focused on helping everyone in the class improve and work towards his/her goals.  Sometimes the hardest part of every workout is just pulling into the parking lot, because once inside everything else is doable.

February

Hadley Santos

Our member of the month for February is Hadley Santos. Hadley has gone above and beyond being an excellent member! Check out her interview below.

1. How long have you been with us At CFBY?
- I started crossfit about 5 months ago, Crossfit Brickyard was the first box I joined. I have been a Brickyarder ever since the start.

2. Do you remember your first workout?
- Yes! my first workout was the first week of this past October right
out of foundations. The workout was called "Jack" it was Max Rounds in 20 Minutes of 10 push press 85#, 10 KB Swings 35# and 10 Box Jumps 20". Going in to the workout I thought "How hard can a 20 minute workout actually be?" I quickly found out just how hard when I looked up at the clock realizing we were only at the half way point and the look of complete horror must have enticed Coach Gerry and Chris to come over and help guide me through survival for the rest of the workout. That's when I knew CFBY was for me.

3. How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?
- Before CFBY I was always in to fitness. I had a gym membership and would go regularly. I always tried to follow a schedule and tried to stick to working differen't muscle groups at a time with endurance exercises in between. I always felt like there was something missing and was tired of the routine. Today I can say that I feel more fit than I have ever been before. My overall strength and endurance have improved imensely and I look forward to coming in working hard and being challenged to be better everyday.

4. If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?

-Handstand walking, power cleans and back squats

What animal best represents you today?
- Tiger

5. If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?

- Anything motivating and loud!

6. If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go?

-Hardworking, Determined, Motivated, Open minded, Supportive

work hard! Stay positive and create goals for yourself. Listen to your coaches and soak in everything they have to teach you, you will be surprised finding out what you are capable of.

Check out our interview with Noah below:

1. How long have you been with us at CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?
a. 1 Year and 1 Month.
b. 3 Rep Max to establish back squat. I was so uncomfortable with the barbell and nowhere close to below parallel.

2. How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?
a. I am a more confident athlete/individual than ever before. I am much more willing to try something new whether it’s at the gym or in my everyday life. I never realized how weak and inflexible I was until I started at Brickyard. Brickyard and Crossfit has also made me realize how important it is to always try and learn more. Whether it’s perfecting a dip drive or trying to learn more about the food you put in your body everyone should strive to be more open minded.

3. If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?
a. Being tall many crossfit moves are not too easy for my long wingspan. That being said the perfect workout would be some combination of: Rowing, Box Jumps, Walls Balls, and either double unders or running; just so I can stay ahead of Mark…

4. What animal best represents you today?
a. T-Rex has always been a nickname and it still makes sense today because “T-Rex hates pushups”

5. If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?
a. This is a hard question! If I had to pick one it would be AC/DC Thunderstruck.

6. If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go?
a. Smart, Loving, Dedicated, Husband & Father

7. Do you have any advise for someone just starting at BrickYard?
a. My advice for anyone starting is to just keep showing up. If you keep showing up you will get stronger!
