Bring a friend to BrickYard!
Thursday July 6th is bring a friend day! Do you have trouble explaining to your non-CrossFit friends why it is you do what you do, or why you're so passionate about BrickYard? Is it difficult for you to convince them that CrossFit is not scary or impossible but fun and infinitely scale-able?

Member of the Month
The member of the month for May is Donna !!!! Donna has been with us from the very beginning and is part of what makes BrickYard special. Check out her interview below!
1. How long have you been with us At CFBY? Do you remember your first workout?
I started at Brickyard 4 years ago. It took me about a month to work up the nerve to call Gerry. I think the first thing I asked him is “can old people do this?” The first workout that is seared in my memory is “100 burpees”. I don’t think I even knew what a burpee was. I had done about 15 when the first person finished.
2. How would you compare your previous lifestyle with the one that is today?
I’ve been active all of my life. I enjoy cycling, skiing, hiking, and I’ve been into martial arts for about 20 years. I was slowly finding more and more limitations. Little repetitive injuries were taking their toll and I found I was stepping off the mat more I was participating. I feel like now I know so much more about myself. What I thought was an injury before, I now think of as a mobility issue that can be explored and corrected. My diet has completely changed. I used to always be either ravenous or stuffed. I didn’t know how to plan a meal without bread.
3. If you could design the perfect workout for yourself that would it be?
Something with snatches, kettlebells, and rope climbs! Maybe sneak a run in there too…I miss running!
4. What animal best represents you today?
Turtle. I try to be patient, steady, and grounded. I’ve also just recently come to the conclusion that sometimes you just get flipped over onto your shell, and there is no way to get back up again without help from friends and family. The community at CFBY has definitely helped me to right myself as I’ve dealt with my ankle fracture.
5. If you could pick the perfect song to listen during the best workout of your life what would it be?
I was once riding my bike along Ellington ridge when I decided to climb up to the top of Soapstone Mountain. I hit the summit listening to Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah. To throw in a little martial arts axiom, that was a mind, body spirit moment that I look forward to recapturing when I’m healed.
For a straight up CrossFit workout though, I would like something old school….Creedance Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane…..that would be cool.
6. If you were to summarize your lifestyle in 5 words or less, how would it go?
Healthy, Happy, Hydrated, Healing , and for a non-H word Laughter, lots of Laughter.
7. What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting?
Take the leap! The CFBY coaches are teachers first, and you can’t be a good teacher without investing a lot of time in learning. They are passionate about what they do, and attentive to what you need. I’ve had to keep weight off my ankle for three months now and the coaches have always found a way to scale things so that I can get a complete workout.
What’s really special though goes back to the first workout. The whole class stayed to see my through those burpees. There I was worried about being the old lady in class and here was this group of strangers that cared enough to see me through. I’ve experienced that sense of shared commitment a thousand times since and it never gets old!
