I tried every sport I could growing up (soccer, basketball, football, track & field, diving/swimming, rugby….).  I played rugby through the end of collage and beyond until the injuries were too much for me.  In 2008 a good friend of mine told me to come to a free class at a CrossFit gym that opened near him.  It left me exhausted and wanting more.  After the first class I was hooked!!  Before I knew it, I could lift more weight, move faster and doing skills that I could never do before.  I decided this was my new sport and started getting competitive within CrossFit.  In 2011 I started coaching and loved being a part of helping people realize they can do more than they thought.  I loved watching people come to class with a frown on their face leave with a smile.  By 2012 I was ready to quit my full time job as a structural engineer and open CrossFit BrickYard.  After 8 years, I am still pushing myself to get better and now get to help people be healthy and fit everyday.

I was physically active at an early age, starting competitively swimming at the age of 10 and continued throughout my college career. After college I got into running and ran 5 half marathons and 1 full marathon. I found CrossFit 7 years ago or it really found me. My husband found CrossFit and fell so in love with it that after being an engineer for 4 years he wanted to open up our own box. Before we opened I would CrossFit once in a while, but always-reverted back to long distance running. To be honest I couldn’t understand why people loved CrossFit so much. Then we opened BrickYard and this is when I fell in love with CrossFit. BrickYard has an atmosphere like nothing else I have experienced. This is something that you just have to come in and experience for yourself. I have found myself doing things that I never thought possible like pull ups, muscle ups and handstand push ups. I still run when it is in the workout of the day and I love every minute of it. I have found that CrossFit has made me a fastest runner than I have ever been, without running miles at a time that would mess my knees up for days. CrossFit BrickYard also challenges me everyday to work harder and kick my old self’s butt from time to time. I am 34 years old, mother of a 7 year old, and I am stronger, faster and in the best shape that I have ever been in my life. I owe that not just to CrossFit but the amazing and inspiring community that is BrickYard.

Besides being into physical fitness, I always had a love for science. More specifically a love for how things affect health. I received a BS from Iona College in biology and continued my scientific career at the University of Connecticut where I earned a PhD in molecular and cell biology. After graduating, I did a 3-year post doctorial at Yale University in the school of Public Health. My focus has always been digestive tract symbiosis, ie; how microbes interact with the digestive tracts and I still continue this research at Uconn today. During my time at Yale I began to learn about how foods affect the microbes that live in our gut. This inspired me to focus more on nutrition. I truly believe that nutrition is the foundation for success in everything we do. One of the best parts of my day is hearing about people having success with not just weight loss but with body image and overall health.  We are not just a number on the scale; we are humans that are capable of doing physically amazing things with our bodies. My goal as a box owner, coach, nutrition advisor is to show our members that there is beauty in strength and embracing this is the way you see results.

Being in the Crossfit community for 3 years I now have the privilege to coach at Brickyard.  My educational background is in Exercise Science where I continue to study at the University of Connecticut. I began coaching because I passionately believe in the life-changing benefits of functional fitness. My goal as a fitness coach is to inspire individuals to make long-term lifestyle changes, and I have found that CrossFit’s scalable intensity and commitment to functional movement makes it the perfect program for individuals of all ages and abilities.

I strongly believe that the psychology of sport and fitness training plays a vital role in the success of any program or team. For that reason, the coordination of the corporate wellness program and bringing Crossfit to the local community has become a vital role and responsibility of mine at Brickyard. Whether I am coaching or participating in a class my goal is to foster a positive training environment to help athletes overcome self-doubt or perceived limitations to achieve their full potential.

I found CrossFit about 5 and half years ago. I had always been an athlete, and after school was over I was having a hard time finding a sport to continue committing myself to. CrossFit filled that gap for me and has been an unbelievable experience. I began in 2008, and competed at the 2009 and 2010 Regionals as an individual. I took a break in 2011 and 2012 due to a combat deployment to Afghanistan with the United States Marine Corp. Shortly after coming back to the states, Gerry pursued his dream and opened CrossFit BrickYard. Since it's opening, I have been lucky enough to work for my best friend and be a part of so many people's lives as they pursue their goal of health and fitness. Watching people succeed, make progress and smile when they recognize their abilities is one of the most amazing things anyone could ever wish for, and I get to do that on a daily basis at CrossFit BrickYard.

I spent the majority of my youth training as a competitive speed skater and ran cross-country on both my high school and college teams in an effort to remain conditioned during off-seasons.

Life became a whirlwind after that between travel, getting married and starting a family.  In what feels like a blink of an eye I went from a competitive athlete to a sedentary, happily married, mother of three who upon turning 40 took a long, hard look in the mirror and no longer recognized herself.  Somehow, I had managed to gain upwards of 70 lbs. and had totally lost touch with my old self, let alone the competitive side of it.  Somewhere along the way, I had met a fellow preschool mom, who was running a Crossfit box out of her garage.  She introduced me to the Crossfit methodology and I can still remember leaving that garage feeling both defeated as well as inspired!

Luckily, I managed to keep that feeling with me as I went through both a move and a not so expected 3rd pregnancy (for which I am now eternally grateful for).  When I finally made the decision to make a change, I found myself blindly jumping full force onto a diet that my younger sister and brother in law were having great success with at the time.  Basically, it was a low glycemic/high protein diet and before I knew it pounds that I had struggled to lose for years were just falling off.  For the first time in my life I started to make the connection between sugar/carbs & weight loss /increased energy & I was hooked and have never looked back!  I became increasingly more confident and actually began making regular use of the gym membership that I had been paying for on a monthly basis for all of those years!

It was about this time that those feelings about Crossfit that I had tabled began to resurface.  I began researching local Crossfit boxes but couldn’t help but feel intimidated looking at the photos of insanely fit athletes that were posted on their websites.  As luck would have it, my husband was working in the area at the time and mentioned that he saw that Crossfit Brickyard was scheduled to open.  I told myself that this was a sign and that being a new box, surely there would be other new people so perhaps I could fly under the radar.   My last obstacle/excuse was that I had would have a toddler in tow.  Of course, in his usual fashion, Gerry managed to talk me out of that excuse as he and Michele not only had a toddler of their own, but also had an entire enclosed play area for the kids to hang out in while I got my workout in!  Anyway, I somehow managed to make my way in that first day and can honestly say that I have never, ever looked back (despite driving in with white knuckles& periodic nervous pee stops along the way for many weeks)!!   I just can’t imagine my life without Crossfit at this point.  Not only am I in the best shape of my life but also I am once again in touch with the competitive athlete within.  I continue to accomplish things both mentally and physically on a daily basis that I never thought possible!

I think the thing I love most about Crossfit is that it truly can be whatever you need/want it to be. It can be as simple as getting you in great shape and shedding a few pounds all the way up to becoming competitive or keeping you elite in your specialty and anywhere in between… your call!

I am so very grateful to be given both the opportunity and the privilege to train incoming members in our foundations program.  Even after 2 years of being at Brickyard I am still so in touch with those initial emotions! I can honestly say that I hope I never lose touch with those emotions b/c I will forever be grateful for all of the strength and confidence I have gained along the way and never want to take it for granted.

That said, I am thoroughly enjoying watching all of the foundations graduates cycle into the regular classes and watching the same happen for them!

In addition to coaching our Foundations classes, I enjoy helping out with our Crossfit Kids program.  I love instilling a love of fitness and the confidence that comes along with, in our youngest members (including a few of my own)!

  • Athletic background: High school: Football, basketball, indoor/outdoor track, summer league swimming for Town of Berlin. College; Rugby for Burlington (VT) Mens D2, Champlain College Rugby

I started Crossfitting in the summer of 2008.  I was fat, about 220#, with a nice soft center.  I was no longer playing competitive sports and was just going to a normal gym and doing a normal split routine.  One of my buddies was in the Army and introduced me to Crossfit.  Slowly I started incorporating CF into my work outs and soon it was all I was doing.  I found a CF gym in Berlin, CT, and was hooked.  This is also where I met Gerry and Seth as well and we have been training together ever since.

In a little over six months I was down to about 176#. I then started competing and got even more hooked.  It has truly changed me for the better.

After three gyms and several years later I have found a home in Brickyard.  I can say, after experiencingthree gyms and being in CF for almost six years, the coaching, programing, and ownership here at Brickyard is the best I've ever seen or been involved in.  This place is great and I'm happy and proud to be a part of it.

I discovered CrossFit nearly 6 years ago back when it operated off the main site and out of friends garages. I consider myself lucky to have seen the evolution of the sport and the athletes in it. Being an athlete my entire life, CrossFit fulfills the need for sport in my life. Having a passion for helping people become better versions of themselves drives me to be the best coach I can be. Whether I can help someone learn a new skill, PR by a single pound or 25 pounds, the reward is immeasurable. There are a ton of CrossFit boxes out there but Brickyard is different and I am grateful to be a part of the team.

My CrossFit story started in 2007 when I started to attempt to follow the CrossFit main site.  I spent years combining a highly scaled and modified version of this with moderate distance running (half marathon is the longest).  I have always looked for a challenge in my professional and personal endeavors.  When I saw the sign go up at CrossFit BrickYard, I decided to stop in.  After being introduced to "real" CrossFit with the professional staff at CFBY, I quickly learned where the gaps in my fitness were.  Thanks to Gerry, Michele, Seth and Dan, I found myself entering CrossFit competitions and the CrossFit Opens.  My performance at work and in my hobbies (hiking, SCUBA diving, kayaking to name a few) have improved immensely thanks to their instruction and programming.  At CFBY there is no substitute for high standards and hard work.  The results I experienced and continue to see are motivating.  I have been instructing and training others in one form or another since 2002.  Having the opportunity to share the CFBY experience as a coach and help others achieve their goals is a privilege.  It is my sincere hope that every athlete I train enjoys the same experience that I have.

Growing up I was fortunate to have a father who instilled in me a passion for overall fitness and  competitive sports.  From a very young age I was always trying to keep up with my brothers in whatever they were doing, with my father encouraging us all the way.  We didn’t realize it at the time but we had what I consider a Crossfit box in our garage.  My father would have us doing box jumps, olympic lifts, and even pulling steel sleds around a gravel parking lot.  He was a true believer that everyone should conquer functional movements before they were able to excel in specific sports.  I thank him for this as I know I am a true testament to this and hope to instill this in my children, as well all the children I coach.

As a stay at home mother, I did not find Crossfit until “later” in life, it was just after my 4th child was born, just over 4 years ago.  After finishing college, where I was part of a Division I track & field team, a ran marathons and triathlons.  As much as I enjoyed these things, I felt something was missing. I tried Crossfit and was hooked. I enjoy pushing my body to see what it can do, and often times I am very pleasantly surprised by the outcome.  I feel incredibly lucky and proud to be part of the Brickyard family and coaching staff. We are a family with amazing leaders who truly want to see people accomplish their goals, whatever those may be.  I am a firm believer in the Crossfit Kids program, and love coaching the kids as they bring another level of excitement and eagerness as they learn how their bodies can move.

I was introduced to CrossFit in October 2012. I walked into CFBY and right away I knew that it was the place for me. Since starting CrossFit, I have seen so many changes in myself both physically and mentally. The results I experienced and continue to see are motivating and only make me want to work harder to get better then I was the day before. The amazing staff at CFBY really makes everyone, including myself, feel like family. I have never met a more professional staff at any gym I have been to.

Having been asked by Michele to coach CrossFit Kids was the best thing. I wanted the opportunity to give to kids the education and motivation they need to know that exercise isn’t always hard and that it can actually be fun. Since I started coaching at CFBY, I have noticed so much happiness in all the children from what they are learning and the excitement they have when they accomplish something that they once thought they couldn’t do. It is truly a privilege to coach and be a part of the wonderful organization of Crossfit Brickyard.
